We Are Black Environmental Initiative

The Black Environmental Initiative (BEI) began in 2019 as a volunteer-led network founded by Naolo Charles, bringing together dozens of committed volunteers across several cities. We have since grown into a registered non-profit promoting black-led environmental engagement and protection for communities. Since 2019, we have led successful environmental initiatives in black and other equity-denied communities with a focus on four areas:

Land & Nature
We contribute to reconnecting our people to nature.
Climate Change
We help prepare our communities for the impacts of climate change.
Green Jobs
We train and place young workers, newcomers, youth-at risk and people with barriers to employment in green jobs with a focus on 4 sectors: green construction, climate science, environmental policy, and nature-based work.
Solidarity
We work in solidarity with Indigenous people, brown people and white allies. We work with anyone who is committed to environmental justice regardless of racial identity, ethnicity, faith, gender, sexual orientation and political affiliations.
Community Energy
We promote the idea of community energy and the adoption of renewable energy in society.
Youth Leadership
We invest in the training, leadership and mentoring of young leaders, thinkers and creatives.
