Our Theory of Change

Black Environmental Initiative (BEI) believes that environmental action can be a powerful tool for building stronger, healthier, and more self-determined Black communities. Our theory of change is guided by three interconnected pillars:1) Healing: We use environmental education, cultural programming, community dialogue, and access to nature to promote wellness, strengthen relationships, and reconnect people to histories that restore dignity and belonging.2) Dignity and Power: We support pathways to green jobs , green entrepreneurship, food sovereignty, and land stewardship so that communities can move from being consumers to becoming producers, owners, and innovators within the green economy.3) Self-Determination: We help communities build the capacity to participate in and benefit from environmental policy and infrastructure, including renewable energy and other community-led solutions, so we can shape our own future.
This campaign invites remembrance rather than instruction. It recognizes that this knowledge has lived quietly through generations, even when disrupted, and that it can guide how we live today.
This campaign restores that understanding — approaching health as something rooted in environment, care, and community.
Every day, we push campaigns that help rally movements around these goals. Below are our current campaigns.

Our Programs

4 Pillars of Impact

We reconnect Black and other equity-denied communities with nature through environmental education, cultural learning, and hands-on experiences. Our programs raise awareness of environmental challenges, celebrate Black environmental history and leadership, and strengthen understanding of the connections between social, economic, and environmental well-being. We aim to cultivate a new generation of environmental stewards who are equipped to care for their communities, protect natural spaces, and contribute to a more sustainable and equitable future.

We help address barriers to employment and economic opportunity by connecting community members with training, internships, mentorship, and career pathways in the green economy. We work with employers, governments, educational institutions, and community partners to increase access to green jobs and emerging industries. We also support aspiring entrepreneurs and community leaders in building businesses and initiatives that generate environmental, social, and economic benefits.

We work to ensure that Black and other equity-denied communities have access to healthy environments and are prepared for the impacts of climate change. This includes promoting access to clean air, clean water, healthy green spaces, urban forests, and nature-based solutions that improve community well-being. We also strengthen local relationships and community networks that can support resilience, mutual support, and preparedness during environmental, economic, and public health challenges.

We support community participation in the transition to renewable energy. Our vision is a future where communities are not only consumers of energy but also active contributors to a cleaner and more resilient energy system. Through education, partnerships, and policy engagement, we explore opportunities for community-led renewable energy projects, local ownership models, and equitable access to the benefits of the clean energy economy.
